Master Craps – Hints and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
