Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Schemes: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
