Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
