Pickup Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
