Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
