Become Versed in Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The History of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
