Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
