Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
