Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
