Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
